A Gift from Nature
Posted in Thoughts on December 2, 2008| Leave a Comment »
I went out to Alex’s car this morning to say, “good-bye.”
As I turned to come back into the house, I looked at the frost on my car that had been out all night.
This photo is of its back window.
Truly a Gift from Nature. It will be a good day.
The “Wisdom” Book

Recently while in Barnes & Nobles, I saw this book, which by design looked interesting. Of course it was sealed and one could not open it to see what was inside. Its simple title, “Widsom” made it even more enticing.
I happened to “Stumble” upon its website, I hope you enjoy its excerpts.
Death at WalMart – Crazed Shoppers – A Black Day
Posted in Thoughts on November 28, 2008| 1 Comment »
I just got done reading about the death of a temporary maintenance employee of a WalMart located on Long Island. The young man showed up for work this morning, and by 6:03 AM he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
That store opened its doors today, Black Friday, at 5:00 AM…the shoppers stampeded through the doors, breaking the doors off of their hinges, and while employees attempted to control the crazed shoppers. This young man was trampled to death…he couldn’t get himself back up onto his feet, crazed shoppers stepped on him and over him.
No one stopped…no one helped….they were all too intent on “getting the deal” rather than stopping and helping.
The doors should have been locked, and everyone should have been arrested and charged with manslaughter. It certainly was a Black Friday for one man and his family, who paid “full price”…what is the matter with us?

The Joys of Being “On the Road.”

I decided to go up the coast between Hampton Beach and Portsmouth today.
It was a very gray raw windy October day and back in Deerfield everything is dead from the heavy frosts we’ve recently had…and today was nothing but the preamble to Winter.
Low and behold, this scene literally popped out at me…I had to turn the car around, go back and photograph it, as it was such bright spot…in such a gray day….look at the color and contrast of these Cosmos and their background.
Sometimes it’s nice to be…”on the Road.” This moment made my day.
What You’d Expect?

Yesterday I needed to add some oil to my car’s engine, so I pulled into Klem’s Mobil Oil convenience station on Elm Street to buy a quart. It’s a nice clean store, with all the stuff you’d expect for such a store, including wine….but they didn’t have oil! Rite-Aid, the pharmacy, across the street had it. I didn’t expect that.
I was just emailing Bill O’Reilly…I was able to write it, but discovered that the only way you can correspond with him from his web-site is to be a Premium member. Oh, maybe I expected this one.
What Happened to Civility?

I’ve had another couple of days of “having it.” I wrote about starting with too much “Blame. ” After watching on You Tube, the Bill O’Reilly supposed interview of Barney Frank, I think we need to bring more Civility into our daily lives too.
According to Webster’s, Civility is: 2 a: civilized conduct ; especially : courtesy , politeness b: a polite act or expression.
One only has to watch 30 seconds of this clip to realize that what the lack of Civility does to the alleged interview…it wasn’t because there was no two-way-communications. There was no “Civility.”

It has been really hard to be motivated to do much of anything over the past week or so. Part of it is the weather, part of it is knowing the “Oil-man Cometh” and then everything that has been going on in the financial markets, congress and the World.
There is absolutely nothing that we can do about any of it, this financial crisis stuff especially. I find it scary, and frankly unimaginable that the United States of America is in such a sorry state of affairs, but it’s not just about the money.
It’s also about our leadership….President, Senators, Representatives….Republicans, Democrats, others and then the media…the 24 hour news cycle and blowhard talk show hosts. I’m tired of extremes. I’m tired of sound bits. I’m tired of partisanship & rancor. I’m tired of so many people placing “Blame” and then being surprised that we are a polarized nation.
We spend more time Blaming than we do fixing….we can’t “fix” if we stay lodged in our “political corners” and we can’t have the constructive dialog needed to fix things, by starting with first placing “Blame.”
Let’s just stop the “Blame” game…politically and personally.

The Power of Being a “Daughter”
Posted in Thoughts, tagged daughters on September 12, 2008| 1 Comment »
My daughter lives way away from New Hampshire and is on her own. Taking after her mother she is an independent sort, who, if need be could change a flat tire.
Yesterday, she had a tire that was a leaker, she put self-inflate stuff into it, hoping it would last long enough to get her to the Tire Guys by six o’clock. It didn’t.
On her way over there, it went flat, and she went to her trunk for her spare…dressed for work, in a dress, etc. Well of course the donut was flat too.
Living in a realitively small town meant that a fellow stopped to help…when he saw the donut was flat it was just a matter of a simple “whistle” at some other passing motorist, who turned around and came back to help too. Of course Guy #2 was a friend of Guy #1, and Guy#2 had an air compressor in his truck so they blew the tire up and my daughter was on her way to the other Tire Guys…and made it to their shop by the six o’clock deadline.
She was standing outside the shop, when Guy #1 drove up. She asked what he was doing there, and he told her, “I wanted to make sure you made it.”
It turns out he was on his way to pick up his eight year old daughter when he stopped to help my daughter. He simply said, “I thought about my daughter being you, and that I’d appreciate it if somebody checked up on her.”
Ahhh, the power of being a “Daughter”.
